TOOELE — Investigators believe fatigue was the main factor in a crash that killed two people and shut down I-80 in Tooele for a time early Monday morning.
Sgt. Donovan Lucas of the UHP said a silver Mustang was eastbound on I-80 near the state Route 201 exit at 1 a.m. when the male driver lost control. The vehicle went off the road to the right, hit the embankment and a ditch, and rolled back onto I-80.
As the Mustang reentered the freeway, it was struck by another vehicle. The Mustang's female passenger was ejected during the rollover and was then hit by a semitrailer on I-80. The Mustang's driver and passenger died at the scene.
No one else was injured.
UHP said the victims were wearing seat belts but the woman may not have been wearing the shoulder strap properly.
UHP said the couple was from Houston, Texas, likely passing through Utah. Investigators were trying to notify the couple's family and had not yet released their names.
UHP was looking for a red vehicle that was at the scene at the time of the crash. It was not directly involved but the occupants may have witnessed the incident.
