COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — A 21-year-old man was in critical condition Sunday after he was allegedly stabbed multiple times by his teenage brother during an argument, police said.

The victim, who was not identified by Cottonwood Heights Police, underwent surgery at Intermountain Medical Center for multiple stab wounds to his side and arm, said Sgt. Gary Young. He estimated the man was stabbed five or six times.

"Anytime you're fighting and weapons get involved, it's tragic," Young said.

Young said police were summoned to a residence at 2653 E. Creek Road about 5:15 a.m. Sunday, where the brothers had been attending a family gathering that had ended hours earlier. The men were arguing about something, Young said.

Young said alcohol may have been a factor but it is not yet clear what triggered the disagreement between the brothers.

Jarred Nevens lives next door. He said he heard a woman yelling and people arguing around 1 a.m. but couldn't make out what it was about. He went to bed and was asleep when the stabbing happened. He had no idea what had happened.

"I can't even imagine it," Nevens said. "In fact, the brothers, they seem like they get along great to me, so that's why it's so shocking."

He said the brothers also seemed like good guys and hadn't caused any trouble in the past that he knew of.

"They're very respectful to me," Nevens said. "I know they argue and stuff sometimes, but they seem like nice kids.

He never thought the arguing could escalate to such violence.

The 16-year-old boy was taken into custody, booked into detention and faces possible charges of aggravated assault, Young said.
