SALT LAKE CITY — Rookie phenomenon Robert Griffin III has taken the NFL by storm, leading the Washington Redskins to a spot back in the playoffs for the first time since 2007 and the team's first division title since 1999.
Griffin has injected excitement back into a franchise and fan base, and has likely salvaged the career of Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan. At a press conference on Wednesday, Shanahan got an unexpected visit from his starting quarterback, who decided to play a prank on his coach.
Griffin sat among media members, waiting for his turn to ask coach Shanahan a question.
"I tried to put a good game plan together, but I wasn't sure how healthy you were, so it was hard without you calling me," Shanahan responded. "You got me good."
Impressive dunking
Arkansas high school basketball player Victor Dukes posterized his defender in an amazing dunk. Dukes is passed the ball at the top of the key, gets past a defender and drives toward the basket. A defender moves into position, in hopes to stop the basket, but finds himself on the losing end of a monstrous dunk. Even after the dunk, it looked as though Dukes was still getting air.
In a separate game in Pennsylvania, high school athlete and Arizona recruit Rondae Jefferson took matters into his own hands. Dribbling the length of the court, Jefferson weaved through defenders and threw the ball off the glass self alley-oop. The dunk made SportCenter's top plays, which made Jefferson really happy.
"Espn y'all," Jefferson tweeted, "I made it!!!!!"
JaVale McGee did what?
JaVale McGee is not known for shooting the three ball. If anything, McGee is asked to fill up the space down low. However, at the end of the third quarter between the Denver Nuggets and the Los Angeles Clippers, McGee managed a buzzer-beating three. The fact that no one was guarding McGee says a lot, but a three-point shot by a big man is always an added bonus. After all, this is the same McGee who couldn't remember if his team was on offense or defense.
Blaze QB joins the Dallas Cowboys
Utah Blaze quarterback Nick Stevens signed with the Dallas Cowboys Wednesday, becoming the fifth member of the Blaze to sign with the NFL in the offseason.
"I am very thankful for the opportunity to play with the Blaze. I was really looking forward to working with the coaching staff and players," Stephens said. "(Playing for Dallas) is a phenomenal opportunity and situation. I look forward to learning from some of the brightest minds in the game."
Stephens played two preseason games for the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent in 2012. He completed four-of-five passes for 24 yards. Will Stephens be Tony Romo's replacement at Dallas? Time will only tell. Team owner Jerry Jones, however, says the team will see dramatic changes in the offseason.
