SALT LAKE CITY — A man who started his trade when poodle skirts were popular and Elvis Presley was recording his first songs hung up his hat and retired on Friday. Clyde Ashcroft has been a Barber for 58 years.

Ashcroft is retiring from his barber shop at 3609 South State Street in Salt Lake where he has been cutting hair for 36 years. He originally established a barber shop located on 3900 south, but it burned down.

Over that time, he has gained a lot of dedicated clients who will be sad to see him leave.

"I've had one guy that's been with me for 58 years," Ashcroft said. "All my customers are pretty old. They're my age."

During his years as a barber, Ashcroft said that he has seen many things change including his earnings.

"I think my first year, I averaged about $.59 an hour," he said.

When his longtime clients heard that he was retiring, many of them came to receive one last Ashcroft haircut.

"His friend called him up this morning and told him I was retiring, so he came over to get his last haircut from me," Ashcroft said.

But Ashcroft's friends weren't the only ones that benefited from his services. His children and family members also received many haircuts over the years from him.

"All my friends had long hair, and of course, I had to get a haircut all the time and look respectable," said his son, Chris Ashcroft.

Ashcroft said that he has enjoyed his time cutting hair and meeting the people of Salt Lake City.

"I have met a lot of nice people and had good conversations," he said.
