ST. GEORGE — Community members held a vigil Thursday night directly across the street from where Dixie State College's confederate statue once stood.

The statue, which stood on the campus grounds for 25 years, was removed last week. Now students and community members continue debating whether it's time for the college to change its name.

Supporters of keeping the Dixie name say it is part of the community's heritage. But others are hoping to end what they say is discrimination.

St. George resident Dorothy Engelman said, "That word has too much attached to it for it to continue forward as an institution of higher education."

She also suggested that it's important to think beyond the boundaries of Washington County when deciding on a name for the school.

Brody Mikesell added, "There is a way we can honor our history and past but still progress in a positive fashion."

The board of regents will decide on the school's name next month.
