SOUTH SALT LAKE — A 16-year-old girl was taken into police custody Tuesday afternoon after investigators said she stabbed her mother.
The incident happened at about 3:30 p.m. in a home near 300 East and 3100 South.
South Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller said the girl and her 40-year-old mother were arguing about something that had to do with the daughter's schooling.
The argument became heated and the daughter stabbed her mother three times in the chest and stomach with a kitchen knife, Keller said.
The injured woman was transported to a hospital in serious condition. She was taken into surgery but is expected to survive.
"There's something that has evolved here, whether or not it was reported to police; but for something to escalate to this stage is pretty serious," Keller said.
Officers were able to recover the alleged weapon, and took the 16-year-old to police headquarters for questioning. She was expected to be booked into juvenile detention afterward.
Names of those involved have not yet been released. Police said the girl could face charges of aggravated assault.
Police said the girl's sister and her mother's three friends were in the home when the stabbing happened.
