SALT LAKE CITY — Ben McAdams' successful bid to win the Salt Lake county Mayor's race has now left an open question: Who will replace him in the Utah Senate?
The race is off and running after McAdams resigned his seat late Friday afternoon. Ben McAdams hadn't even completed a full term in the Utah Senate, but he is moving on to the Salt Lake County mayor's office, after winning on election night.
Currently, there are five Democrats wanting to complete McAdams' term.
Among those running is Democrat Party chairman, Jim Dabakis who is a fearless, high energy Democrat. Another candidate is former county council member and daughter of Mayor Ted Wilson, Jenny Wilson.
Also running is Weston Clark who is openly gay and active in Utah Democratic party politics. There is also Utah House Democrat, Brian Doughty, who wants to stay at the Capitol since his House seat was eliminated during redistricting. Attorney Will Carlson and activist Robert Comstock are also candidates that are putting out feelers for the position this week.
Finally, outgoing two-term Salt Lake county mayor Peter Corroon is hoping to stay in politics at the State Capitol. And, he's running after proposing a huge tax increase for the county: A move that may not win him any favors among delegates.
"I don't think a tax increase helps you in an election," said Senate District 2 candidate, Peter Corroon. "But, at the end of the day I'm going to do what I think is right."
In fact, all the candidates will now work the 150 or so Democratic delegates one by one, to win their vote sometime in December. It will be ground level campaigning, into the holiday season.
