NORTH KOHALA, Hawaii — A Kaysville woman is dead after being struck by a vehicle Monday night while riding a motorcycle on a Hawaii highway.
Jennie Wahlstrom, 32, was riding on the back of a 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle being operated by her husband, 35. The two were traveling northwest on the Akoni Pule highway when Wahlstrom's husband swerved to avoid a vehicle that had crossed the center line according to the Hawai'i Police Department.
The motorcycle went off the road and traveled about 150 feet down a steep embankment. Wahlstrom and her husband, who was not identified, were found at the bottom of a gulch 80 feet below the roadway. Neither were wearing helmets.
Hawaii law does not require motorcycle riders 18 and older to wear helmets.
Wahlstrom died at the scene. Her husband was treated for cuts and bruises to his face and right leg at the North Hawai'i Community Hospital.
Police are investigating the accident as a negligent homicide and are currently searching for the driver of the gray sedan that hit the couple.
