LEICESTER, England (AP) — Leicester striker Jamie Vardy set an English Premier League record on Saturday by scoring for the 11th straight game.

Vardy scored in the 24th minute to put Leicester in front against Manchester United at King Power Stadium. The England striker shared the record for scoring in consecutive Premier League games with Ruud van Nistelrooy, who achieved the feat across two seasons in 2003.

Vardy is tied with former Blackpool striker Stan Mortensen for the all-time record of scoring in consecutive games in England's top division. Mortensen did it in 11 straight in the 1950-51 season.

The Premier League began in 1992.

It was a typical goal from Vardy, who raced onto a forward pass behind the United defense from Christian Fuchs, took a touch, and produced a composed, low finish past United goalkeeper David de Gea. Vardy wheeled away in celebration, pointing at his chest repeatedly.

"Well done vardy7!" Van Nistelrooy said on Twitter. "You're number one now and you deserved it."

The game finished 1-1.

Vardy has now scored 14 goals in a breakthrough season. He was playing non-league football only four seasons ago, and wasn't a regular for Leicester last season.

The 28-year-old Vardy's record scoring spree started with a late penalty in the 1-1 draw at Bournemouth in August and has included doubles against Arsenal and Southampton, a winner against Watford and the record-tying strike at Newcastle last weekend.
