SALT LAKE CITY — Over the past few ski seasons, Utah skiers have had the option to rideshare their way to the slopes. They will soon have that same option if they plan trips to other resorts in nearby states.
Rideshare giant Uber announced Wednesday it is expanding “Uber Ski” to be available in 23 cities across the United States beginning Tuesday; Salt Lake City was among the few cities that already had the option. Uber allows riders access to and from most resorts around the Salt Lake City and Park City areas.
The service expansion will mean that Uber Ski service is available in the following areas:
- Anchorage, Alaska
- Boise, Idaho
- Boston
- Colorado Springs, Colorado
- Denver
- Eastern Washington area
- Flagstaff, Arizona
- Fort Collins, Colorado
- Grand Rapids, Michigan
- Green Bay, Wisconsin
- Lehigh Valley area (Pennsylvania and New Jersey)
- Minneapolis-St. Paul area
- New Hampshire
- Portland, Oregon
- Portland, Maine
- The Rockies (Colorado)
- Salt Lake City
- Seattle
- Upstate New York
- Vermont
- Wilkes-Barre Scranton, Pensylvania
- Worcester, Massachusetts
- Wyoming
Anyone who uses the service will have an option to order a ride in a vehicle with extra space or a ski/snowboard rack. For example, those who use the option in Utah have an $8 surcharge tacked on to the standard riding fee.
“Riders can select Uber Ski as they would any other option within the Uber app,” said Uber communications manager Stephanie Sedlak. “What’s it going to do is it’s going to bring a vehicle that has either a truck bed, extra luggage room or ski racks to load up your gear, and you can go on your way.”
Uber drivers in new areas were informed of the new program last week, giving them time to decide if they would participate in it, Sedlak said. Those looking to participate must have the space for skis and snowboards and be prepared for winter driving. She said drivers must document with the company via photo to show they have the space to provide ski service.
Uber Ski is a seasonal service, and Sedlak added that the service will conclude in April for the 2019-2020 ski season.
