SOUTH JORDAN – Throwing a Christmas party is no ordinary event for one family in South Jordan.

They spend thousands of dollars of their own money each year to open up their home to family, friends, neighbors and complete strangers to help donate to a non-profit organization.

It’s all about holding a “party with a purpose.”

For the Parnells, that magic all comes from the spirit of giving. That’s why for the past 10 years they’ve been hosting parties with a purpose.

“There is just a magical presence that occurs with the season of Christmas,” said Kathrine Parnell. “In our household, we think that if you are going to throw a party, you might as well do it for a good cause.”

The Parnells pick up the tab, paying for all the party expenses. It started in 2009 when they threw their first Christmas party in Bakersfield, California.

“If we are going to do that, then let’s meet some need our community has and let’s invite our friends and our family,” said Brian Parnell. “People enjoy giving; it’s not just us.”

This year’s 10th anniversary bash is called “Sip and Support,” where guests will be able to taste a variety of wines and nonalcoholic drinks, along with different kinds of cheeses and appetizers.

In order to legally make that happen, the Parnells hired members of the Wasatch Academy of Wine to come and do the pouring and wine education.

The Parnells estimate the party will cost them about $3,000. That’s because 100% of every $20 ticket sold for the party will go to Holding Out Help, a non-profit organization for those who have escaped polygamy.

“The organization provides housing and food and clothing and all of the logistics that are needed to basically give a person a fresh start in life,” said Kathrine.

That’s why the Parnells say it’s worth every penny to host the party.

“That’s our investment” Kathrine said. “We are blessed, so with what we receive we believe we need to turn around and give back to our community.”

“It’s been hugely successful. It just brings us joy,” said Brian. “It wouldn’t be enough if we just did it by ourselves. That’s why we bring people into our home and say: ‘Come alongside us. Do this with us. It will be fun.’”

The Parnells’ Sip and Support party is scheduled to take place Dec. 7 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at their home.

Tickets sales never transfer through the Parnell’s hands. It all goes directly to Holding Out Help organization.
