SALT LAKE CITY — After Black Friday and Cyber Monday comes Giving Tuesday — and Utah has some of the most charitable cities in the entire country.

According to GivingTuesday.org, the day was created in 2012 to donate to charity. While the date changes year to year, the Tuesday after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, they say, is a “global generosity movement (that) unleash(es) the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.”

A new study from SmartAsset that looked at 200 areas around the country shows the top three most charitable cities in the country are in Utah. Little surprise, they say, because Utah as a state ranks No. 1 in the country for volunteering.

The Provo-Orem metro area ranked No. 1, leading the study for residents giving the highest in terms of a percentage of their income. Residents in the area averaged 6.91% of their income going to charity. The average charitable contribution for those in the area is $13,125.

Coming in second on the list is the Ogden-Clearfield Metro area, which ranked fourth-highest for charitable contributions as a percentage of the average income, at 4.71%. They also rank in the top 10 for average charitable contributions at $9,219. The area tied with Provo and Orem for time spent volunteering at 116 hours a year.

Rounding out the top three most charitable cities in the nation is Salt Lake City. Utah’s capital city had the fifth-highest charitable contributions as a percentage of the average income, at 4.09%. It also came in as the seventh-highest rate with an average charitable contribution at $9,274.
