SALT LAKE CITY — A Latter-day Saint missionary from Utah came in contact with an electrical cable that may have caused him to fall to his death earlier this week, according to a statement from church officials.

Elder Brennan Conrad, 18, died Wednesday after falling from the roof of his apartment building, officials from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said in a statement posted in Spanish to the church’s Dominican Republic website on Thursday.

Conrad, who is from Hyde Park, had been serving since August in Dominican Republic Santo Domingo East Mission, church officials said.

Conrad’s mission companion said Conrad went up to the roof with a bucket to look for water, according to a statement.

“The official report states that he had contact with an electric cable that is presumed to have caused his fall,” the statement said.

Conrad family spokesman Steven Durrant, who also leads the regional group of congregations where the Conrad family lives, told KSL earlier this week that the fall was under investigation.

Hailey Conrad, Brennan’s sister-in-law, said the family was able to speak with Brennan two days before he died.

"It was a blessing we were all together as family and Brennan had the capability of calling us," she said in a family statement.

Brennan Conrad and his mission companion had been named district leaders in their mission the week before his death, and were leading six other missionaries, according to the Thursday statement.

Bret G. Smith, president of the Santo Domingo East Mission, said Thursday that “many were baptized through the faith” of Conrad and one of his early mission companions.

“Elder Conrad was a great man, with exceptional faith,” Smith said in the Spanish statement. “When he arrived in the country, we could feel something very special about him.”

A GoFundMe page* has been set up in Conrad’s memory.
