BANGKOK (AP) - Thai police said Monday they have arrested a man with joint French-Portuguese citizenship who is wanted by authorities in France on suspicion of attempting to smuggle hundreds of kilograms (pounds) of cocaine.

Thailand's immigration police division said Avelino de Jesus, 33, was arrested Sunday as he tried to cross the border from Thailand into Laos.

A police statement said France issued an international arrest warrant for de Jesus after he and several accomplices unsuccessfully tried to smuggle 305 kilograms (670 pounds) of cocaine into France. It said de Jesus entered Thailand last November on a Portuguese passport.

The gang, which allegedly included more than a dozen members, was said to have transported cocaine from South America to France via Suriname and Cote d'Ivoire.
