SALT LAKE CITY — Even though Netflix has far fewer movies available to stream than Amazon Prime Video, it has more critically-acclaimed films, according to a new study.

Netflix has more movies that are “certified fresh” on movie review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes than Amazon Prime Video, Hulu and HBO Now combined, according to StreamingObserver.com.

“Amazon Prime Video may have more than 4.5x as many movies as Netflix, but quantity isn’t everything,” the study says.

StreamingObserver.com is an independent news source for information about streaming services and technology, according to the website.

As of Jan. 20, Netflix has 3,839 total movies available for streaming users, according to the study. Amazon Prime Video has 17,461, while Hulu has 2,336, the study states. HBO Now has 815 movies available.

Of the movies Netflix has available, 596 are rated certified fresh according to Rotten Tomatoes criteria, the study notes. That’s about 15.5 percent of Netflix’s total streaming lineup.

Movies are determined certified fresh if they have a Tomatometer rating of 75 percent or higher after a set number of reviews, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

Wide-release movies must have 80 reviews to be eligible for a certified fresh rating, while limited-release movies must have 40 and TV shows must have 20, according to the site.

By comparison, Amazon Prime has 232 certified fresh movies, while Hulu has 223 and HBO Now has 38, according to the study.

Even with the amount of certified fresh movies available for Netflix customers, the streaming service’s lineup has 3,000 fewer movies available than it did in 2010, according to the study.

“While many contend that quality is the most important attribute, that’s not to say size doesn’t matter at all,” the study says. “In order to keep subscribers happy, streaming services do need to have a large, diverse library that’s regularly updated so everyone has plenty of options to choose from.”
