THE MOVIES — The 2019 Sundance Film Festival is just around the corner and the institute has released the lineup of films that will play in Park City, Salt Lake City and Sundance Mountain Resort in January.
As always, there is an eclectic selection of films from all over the world that will play at the festival from January 24 to February 3. The festival received a record amount of submissions this year: 14,259. Out of those, 112 were selected and I've picked five I'm intrigued by.
Check out the full list of feature films debuting at the festival at sundance.org. Here are five films we're looking forward to at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival:
“Honey Boy”
"Honey Boy" tells the story of a child TV star and his ex-rodeo clown father as they face their troubled past throughout the years.
This one has me intrigued because it was written by and stars Shia LaBeouf, and is actually autobiographical and mirrors the relationship between him and his father.
LaBeouf has been out of the Hollywood spotlight for some time, but this may be his return and it will be interesting to see his feature film writing debut.
“One Child Nation”
After becoming a mother, filmmaker Nanfu Wang details the history of China’s one-child policy and the generations of parents and children that have been shaped by the social experiment.
This documentary could be fascinating as it tells the story of the country's one-child policy, which almost seems more fiction than fact.
“Official Secrets”
"Official Secrets" boasts a strong cast including Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Ralph Fiennes and Matt Smith. The film tells the true story of British Intelligence whistleblower Katharine Gun. Before the Iraq invasion in 2003, Gun leaked an NSA memo that exposed an illegal spying operation against members of the U.N. Security Council carried out by the United States and the United Kingdom.
The memo Gun leaked proposed blackmailing U.N. member states into voting for war. The cast and the true story background could make for an entertaining political thriller.
“Relive”
Sci-fi and horror aren't always well-represented genres at Sundance, but this year's entry of "Relive" sounds like an intriguing departure from the norm.
David Oyelowo, known for his performance in "Selma," stars as a man whose family dies in what appears to be a murder. He then gets a phone call from his niece, one of the people thought to have been killed. The niece's calls help him rewrite history.
“The Tomorrow Man”
Sundance has a strong track record of some great comedies with a lot of heart and I'm hoping "The Tomorrow Man" is one of those.
In the film, John Lithgow stars as Ed Hemsler, a man who spends his free time preparing for a disaster that may never come. Blythe Danner stars as Ronnie Meisner, a woman who spends her life shopping for things she may never use. The two people look for love in a small town while trying not to get lost in all the clutter.
