TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — The New Jersey Senate has passed a bill in which state taxpayers would help cover the cost of busing private school students in Lakewood for the next three years.
Lakewood's school district is eliminating courtesy busing for the 2016-17 school year because it's facing a $12 million budget deficit.
The bill's sponsor, Republican Senator Robert Singer, tells the Asbury Park Press (http://on.app.com/28R2SI9 ) the measure seeks to stop the cancellation of free busing for 7,000 private school children. Most attend more than 100 Orthodox Jewish yeshivas in the township.
The measure would not include the cost of 3,000 public school students.
Lakewood taxpayers would have to pay $11.76 million of the $14.1 million cost.
The price is based on $884 per each private student compared to the current rate of $625.
