LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Gay and Lesbian Community Center is offering free sex education classes to high school students as an alternative to the Clark County School District's abstinence-based sex ed. The Las Vegas Sun reports many current and former students have criticized the district's sex ed policies. They say teachers skim over important topics and refuse to answer questions. The school district is in the process of re-examining its sex ed curriculum.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada lawmakers have approved a measure aimed at strengthening protections for religious practices in school. The bill clarifies religious rights for students but sets restrictions if the practice is used to bully other students or disrupt an educational environment. It also requires school boards to set up a grievance process for students who claim their religious rights have been violated.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Parents of a sixth-grader at a public charter school in North Las Vegas say a teacher barred their daughter from using the Bible verse John 3:16 in an assignment and they want an apology. Somerset Academy's management company Academica Nevada says in a statement it is investigating the circumstances of the complaint. The school says it considers the civil liberties of its students to be of utmost importance.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Officials say the number of homeless youth attending school in the Clark County School District has jumped by more than 50 percent since last year. KLAS-TV reports that CCSD officials say the number includes students who aren't under the care of their parents or legal guardians and may live on the streets, in shelters, motels or foster care.
