BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Gov. Butch Otter has vetoed a bill that would have required Idaho sign language interpreters to get a state license. The plan aimed to stop unqualified interpreters from causing miscommunications in important situations, like emergency rooms or legal proceedings. But Otter said Wednesday that the plan would have created a strain on already limited resources. Attempting or offering to interpret sign language without a license would have been a misdemeanor under the bill.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A former Muslim turned Christian pastor warned a northern Idaho crowd this week about what he said was the threat of radical Muslims coming into Idaho. Shahram Hadian spoke to the Bonner County Republican Women on Tuesday, contending that Muslims who support Sharia law are trying to move to the region.

Many in Idaho's substantial Basque population faced restrictive immigration policies during the 1920s. That was part of a larger effort to block Catholic immigration.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Southwest Idaho authorities have identified a 19-month-old boy who fell into an irrigation canal and drowned. The Ada County Coroner's Office listed the cause of death for Bayler Robins of Kuna as an accidental drowning.
