CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — Cranston schools will be closed on three religious holidays in the next school year.
The school committee made the decision in the wake of a lawsuit filed by the teachers union after the district held classes on Good Friday for the first time in at least 25 years.
WPRO-AM (http://bit.ly/1G120zj ) reports that the calendar for the 2015-2016 school year will include days off for Good Friday and the Jewish holidays of Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah.
Teachers filed a lawsuit after their requests to observe the Good Friday holiday were denied. A court agreement later allowed teachers to request the day off and about 200 of them did.
School Committee chairwoman Janice Ruggieri said the absence of so many teachers and students influenced the decision on next year's calendar.
