SALT LAKE CITY — The hugely popular cable TV miniseries "The Bible" is coming to the big screen next year.

Twentieth Century Fox announced this week that it will release the motion picture "Son of God" in theaters nationwide Feb. 28, according to the Christian Post.

USA Today reports the film includes parts of five episodes from the 10-part TV miniseries that focus on the life of Jesus Christ. Executive producers Mark Burnett and his wife Roma Downey said the movie, which runs 2 hours 15 minutes, also includes scenes that weren't in the miniseries.

The TV production was viewed by more than 13.1 million people earlier this year on the History Channel. It became the number one cable entertainment show of the year, a fast-selling TV-to-disc title, and was nominated for three Emmy Awards.

Burnett told USA Today he believes the major motion picture release is God's plan. "There's no other explanation for it," he said.

Burnett and Downey are working on a sequel to "The Bible" called "A.D: Beyond the Bible" for NBC.
