SALT LAKE CITY — Christmas is here and I have a feeling you have been procrastinating watching some Christmas movies. Well, that's OK because I have a list of 5 great Christmas movies streaming on Netflix.
Now Netflix streaming is hit and miss at best. But I'm going to save you the trouble of browsing through holiday classics (insert sarcasm) like: "Fat Albert's Christmas Special," "Santa Baby 2," "Power Rangers Super Samurai Stuck on Christmas," and everyone's favorite "He-Man and She-Ra A Christmas Special." Yes, He-Man is wearing a Santa hat in that one.
No, the five we have here are actually good and movies you actually want to watch.
In 2004 Robert Zemicks brought the beloved children's book "The Polar Express" to life on the big screen.
The motion-capture film starred Tom Hanks as, well, everybody. The book is a Christmas classic and the film is quickly becoming a staple in many homes at Christmas time.
The 1985 film "Santa Claus: The Movie" is a bit bizarre, but fun nonetheless.
The movie tells the story of how St. Nick became immortal and the man known as Santa. The movie then jumps to modern day, 1985 modern day, and the head elf, Patch, has fallen in with an evil toy manufacturer who wants to corner the market and eliminate Santa.
The movie isn't exceptional, but it's entertaining and Dudley Moore will get a few laughs out of you.
The Nightmare Before Christmas
1993's "The Nightmare Before Christmas" is often considered more of a Halloween movie than a Christmas movie, but you can watch it for either holiday.
The film is dark and strange, but it's a blast to watch the songs will get stuck in your head for weeks if not months after you watch the movie.
As strange as it sounds this movie has turned into a Holiday classic. It's not for everyone, but if this is your style you're going to be happy it's streaming on Netflix.
Here's one that's considered a Christmas classic by everyone.
1954's "White Christmas" features Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney.
Some of the teenagers in the home will probably think the movie is dated, but that's what Christmas is all about, forcing family time on everyone and watching movies like "White Christmas."
Every once in a while you get a real gem on Netflix and this is one of those times.
1989's "Christmas Vacation" is one of the funniest Christmas movies of all time and is one I watch at least once a year.
Almost every line in the movie is quotable, "If I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet, I wouldn't be more surprised than I am now," which is something you'd expect from a movie written by the one and only John Hughes.
Be warned, however, "Christmas Vacation" is not for the little ones. It is PG-13 for a reason. This is one the teenagers can probably get behind.
In my personal opinion if there is one movie you stream from Netflix this season it should be "Christmas Vacation," but hey, what do I know? Maybe you do really want to see how He-Man and She-Ra spend the Holidays.
Seriously though, you can't really go wrong with any of these, so sit down in front of the fire with a blanket and stream one of these "classics" and enjoy a quiet Christmas Eve.
