THE SUMMER — Welcome to part two of KSL.com's summer movie preview. In part one, we covered some of the big releases to look forward to starting April and going through mid June.
In this article we’re looking at what to look forward to from late June through August. Let’s get into it.
June
“Toy Story 4” (June 21)
It’s been 24 years since Pixar released the original “Toy Story” and now we’re getting the fourth installment in the franchise.
Buzz, Woody and the rest of the gang are all back with some new faces, as well. The new film takes a road trip approach and will likely be full of laughs, heart and moments that make us ugly cry.
July
“Spider-Man: Far From Home” (July 5)
Superhero movies are getting a bit exhausting, and you’d think we’d be ready to call it quits on Spider-Man with all the new iterations. I, for one, am all-in on the webslinger right now.
“Spider-Man: Homecoming” was a lot of fun and the animated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” was the best movie of 2018. “Far From Home” looks like it’s continuing the lighthearted and juvenile tone of its predecessor.
“The Lion King” (July 19)
2019 should really just be renamed the year of the Disney remakes. “The Lion King” will be the third Disney classic getting an update this year, along with "Dumbo" and "Aladdin."
They call it a live-action remake, but that doesn’t seem correct for this film considering it’s all computer-generated imagery. The film is directed by Jon Favreau who did a nice job with the remake of “Jungle Book,” so maybe I’ll give this one a chance.
August
“Hobbs & Shaw” (August 2)
The "Fast and the Furious" franchise has turned into a box office juggernaut and it now has its own spinoff movie.
“Hobbs & Shaw” hits theaters in August and stars Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, who are reprising their roles from earlier films in the series. I’m not a huge fan of the franchise, but I will say the trailer made this film look like complete, absurd fun, which I can get behind — sometimes.
“Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” (July 9)
Get ready to have a whole bunch of fears you repressed years ago come crawling back up your neck in the form of the movie adaptation of “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.”
I remember checking this book out at my elementary school library multiple times and giving myself nightmares from some of the tales. I have no idea if the film will be any good, but the curious and scared 9-year-old in me will definitely go see it.
