SALT LAKE CITY — For any Utahn who has ever been disappointed with his or her Internet speed, just know that it could be worse. A recent map showed that Utah ranks No. 8 in the fastest average Internet speeds in the nation.

The map was created by Mike Simmons for Broadview Networks. The data was compiled from Akamai’s “State of the Internet” review that provided data on each state’s average Internet speeds and the changes by quarter and year. The Akamai Intelligent Platform delivers over two trillion Internet interactions daily and defends against multiple DDoS attacks, which gives them an insight into Internet connection speeds, broadband adoption, mobile use and outages, according to its website.

The speeds were measured in megabits per second, which is a measurement of data transfer speed within a network, according to Broadview Networks. The map is color coded with dark green representing the fastest Internet speeds and red representing the slowest speeds.

Utah was among the fastest connections, ranking eighth with an average speed of 12.1 megabits per second. Virginia ranked first with an average Internet speed of 13.7 mbps, while Alaska ranked last with an average 7 mbps.

Overall, the Northeast had the fastest Internet speeds and the Midwest had the slowest, according to the data.
