Could Dennis Erickson end up at Utah?

Posted Feb 5th - 4:10pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — The Super Bowl may be over, meaning fans will have to drudge through the spring and summer months counting down the days till next season, but football is not that far off for players and coaches, especially at the college level.

Signing day is tomorrow (we'll have a full list of the latest commits as they come in), but are the Utes up to something besides just trying to pull in the best recruits from around the country?

Runnin' Utes: Bachynski back on track, Olsen deserving of more playing time

Posted Feb 4th - 5:43pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — It is a good thing that almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

The Runnin' Utes captured their first home Pac-12 win Saturday despite almost blowing a 22-point lead in the second half against Colorado.

Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak met with the media Monday during his weekly press conference to talk about the win and look ahead to the Utes road trip against Oregon State and Oregon.

Runnin' Utes guard Brandon Taylor: "We got after it"

Posted Jan 30th - 12:57pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — After suffering one of the worst losses in Huntsman Center history, the Utah basketball team bounced back with a lot of running Tuesday afternoon.

The team ran. And ran. And ran some more.

Run with Dick and Jane?

Smith leaving San Fran and Bogut's return from injury

Posted Jan 29th - 7:22pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — It appears that Alex Smith has taken his last snap as a member of the San Francisco 49ers.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Niners will try to trade Smith after the Super Bowl.

Smith lost his starting job after receiving a concussion in the first half of a Nov. 11 matchup against St. Louis, only one week removed from being named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his 18 of 19 for 232 yards and three touchdown performance against the Arizona Cardinals.

Runnin' Utes: Bachynski taking a break

Posted Jan 29th - 12:24pm by Mike Grant

SALT LAKE CITY — The high point of the season came in the third game - a 22 point, 16 rebound performance against Idaho State, and that doesn't even describe the domination.

Utah's 7-foot sophomore from Calgary had stolen the starting spot from Jason Washburn.

Dallin Bachynski, the transfer from Southern Utah University was a sky rocketing player and a possible fan favorite after the game against the Bengals.

Effort, limiting turnovers key for Runnin' Utes in rare Sunday home game

Posted Jan 26th - 1:12pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — Any time you commit 17 turnovers, 15 alone in the first half, your chances of winning are pretty slim.

As well as they played defensively, the Runnin' Utes (9-10, 1-6 Pac-12) came up just short in a five point home loss to the Cal Bears Thursday night.

Krystkowiak: 'It feels good for all of us to validate some of our efforts, get the W'

Posted Jan 21st - 2:18pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's 74-65 win last Saturday against Washington was one for the record books.

The nine point victory, which happened in one of the more hostile environments in all of the Pac-12, signaled the Runnin' Utes first ever conference road win since joining the Pac-12.

Runnin' Utes go for elusive first win in conference play

Posted Jan 19th - 2:08pm by Mike Grant

It has been a very tough start to the conference season for Utah. Losing close games on the Arizona swing and coming very close to beating UCLA gave us all hope. The games against USC and Washington State have killed any possible momentum the team may have.

Getting the news today that Aaron Dotson will be out for a month with his left knee issues doesn't help either.

It is time to generate some new momentum for Utah and it just so happens that it is an easy game to get up for. The Huskies are tied atop the Pac-12 conference standings at 4-0 having won their first three games on the road.

Aaron Roderick changes mind, will stay at Utah

Posted Jan 17th - 12:01pm by Mike Grant

SALT LAKE CITY — In an interesting turn of events, Aaron Roderick just pulled what he did just a couple of years ago when he took the job at Washington and returned to Utah a short time after.

Three keys to a Runnin' Utes win at Wazzu

Posted Jan 16th - 5:09pm by Mike Grant

Something has to give tonight as the Utes head to Pullman, Washington for the game against the Cougars. Both teams are desperate for their first conference win.

How will the Utes win this game?

  • Contain the others - Brock Motum, the 6-10 245 lbs. center from Brisbane, Australia averages 19.8 ppg and 6.4 rpg. In the Cougars 13-point loss to the Cal Bears, Motum had 16 points on 5-14 shooting. He had 29 points vs. Stanford and 15 points against Washington. Motum will get his points but when the rest of the team can be held in check the Utes will be in this game again.

Aaron Roderick hired as assistant coach at BYU

Posted Jan 16th - 2:13pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's most senior member of its offensive staff has taken a job with his alma mater, which also happens to be a big in-state rival just 45 miles down I-15.

Utes wide receiver/passing game coordinator Aaron Roderick has accepted an assistant coach position at Brigham Young University, the school announced Wednesday.

Kelly flies to Philly

Posted Jan 16th - 11:36am by Mike Grant

EUGENE, Ore. — Chip Kelly has agreed to be the 21st head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. Kelly has been in and out of rumors to be a head coach in the NFL since winning the Fiesta Bowl against Kansas State.

Just a few weeks ago, Kelly pulled his name out of the numerous head coaching searches saying he wanted to go remain at Oregon. He had interviewed with the Cleveland Browns and the Philadelphia Eagles prior to making his decision to stay with the Ducks earlier this month.

Something must have changed quickly and Kelly must have loved what he heard from Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie because Kelly is the new head coach of the Eagles. The Eagles released this statement from Lurie about his new hire, "Chip Kelly will be an outstanding head coach for the Eagles," said Lurie.

Ute coach Larry Krystkowiak holds individual player meetings

Posted Jan 14th - 2:40pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — One step forward, two steps back?

After a promising start in conference play, albeit not in the win column, the Runnin' Utes were absolutely man-handled by USC at home on Saturday. The loss, which dropped the Utes to 0-4 in Pac-12 play, prompted Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak to hold individual player interviews to better understand what is going on from an athlete's perspective.

Despite 0-3 start, Utes moving forward confidently in Pac-12 play

Posted Jan 12th - 12:34pm by Robert Jackson

SALT LAKE CITY — Even though the Runnin' Utes have lost their first three conference games, Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak is feeling confident about the direction his team is heading.

And he should - those three losses came by a combined eight points - a one point loss in overtime against Arizona State, a three point loss to the then No. 3 Arizona Wildcats in Tucson, and a four point loss at home to UCLA on Thursday.

"We just have to stay the course and keep the faith," Krystkowiak said.

Krystkowiak: 'It's time to step up'

Posted Jan 11th - 1:03pm by Mike Grant

SALT LAKE CITY - After a nice winter slumber and some shoveling I am hung up on something Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak said in his postgame comments after the UCLA game.

"We're not going to a gun fight with knives anymore, we got a chance to win some games and now it's time for guys to step up," Krystkowiak said confidently.

It is the last part of his quote that needs to be addressed because the Utes are in every single game. They have lost their seven games by a combined 27 points.

Runnin' Utes hope to avoid 0-3 start in conference play, host UCLA

Posted Jan 10th - 4:36pm by Mike Grant

SALT LAKE CITY — Prior to conference play the thought crossed my mind that 9-9 for this Utah basketball team was a possibility. I realize that the Utes have since dropped to 0-2 (losing by a combined four points) and host UCLA tonight.

The fact that the Utes have been in every single game this season gives me no other ideas than to think this game will be close. Utah has been great at forcing their style of play on the other team and that will have to be the case tonight. UCLA in basketball is as good as it gets. They are on the same level as Arizona as far as the type of players they get and as we saw on Saturday, Utah has figured out a way to play with these teams. The question remains if they can win those games.

In order to answer this question I will go in two difference directions.
