Mormon LDS ELIAS SMITH'S JOURNAL 1836 1900+ pgs.

$195.00

Provo, UT | 21 Mins
Offered for sale for $195/OBO is a rare ELIAS SMITH'S JOURNAL in 3 Volumes that includes over 1900 8 1/2" x 11" pages, considered to be over 12,500 dates entries pertaining to ELIAS SMITH who was a cousin to JOSEPH SMITH, JR. who was the first Prophet and President of THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS. That Journal was compiled by Sarah C. Thomas with Indexes for each volume considered to have been arranged by Elias Castle. here is an indication that Journal was transcribed from Elias Smith's manuscript. There is an indication that Elias Smith is a paternal grandfather to Sarah C. Thomas From a printed letter, dated July 23, 1984, regarding that Journal Sarah Thomas wrote: "I HAVE ENGAGED FOR ALMOST 3 YEARS IN TRANSCRIBING HIS MANUSCRIPT JOURNALS FROM 1836 TO WITHIN SIX DAYS OF HIS DEATH IN 1888. IT HAS BEEN A GIGANTIC UNDERTAKING, BUT MOST REWARDING". "HAVE ORDERED 100 COPIES OF MY TRANSCRIPTION THAT WE MIGHT ALL BE MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE CONCERNING OUR ESTEEMED ANCESTOR. THERE WILL BE THREE VOLUMES OF THE WORK, READY TO DISPERSE ON THE SIXTH OF SEPTEMBER."Within a few days prior to this listing I did not find any other listing for sale of that Journal on any website on the Internet.Volume One has over 625 pages, Volume Two has over 625 pages and Volume Three has over 650 pages. The general pages in that Journal were not numbered, however, the Index pages were numbered according to each volume with Volume One having 10 Index pages, Volume Two having 7 Index pages, and Volume Three having 10 index pages for a total of 27 Index pages that have been placed at the back of Volume Three.PLEASE SEE PHOTO COPIES INCLUDED WITH THIS LISTING PERTAINING TO A FEW OF THE INDEX PAGES THAT WILL HELP TO GIVE A FEW PERSPECTIVES ABOUT SUBJECTS INDICATED IN THAT JOURNAL ENTRIES.In my view, I consider that at least many of the entries in that Journal can be rather very interesting and of rather significant historical interest. For example, for the date August 29, 1852 it is written: "Elder Orson Pratt preached a discourse on the doctrine of Plurality of Wives. The Tabernacle was crowded to overflowing. The revelation given in A. D. 1843 on that subject was read in the afternoon." And for another example is on the date on April 11, 1855 it is written: "A variety of business matters occupied my time, as is usual, and among other items I took the acknowledgment of a deed from President Brigham Young conveying all his property, real and personal, to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it being the first consecration deed made under the laws of the Legislative Assembly passed at the 4th annual session approved January 18th, 1855."It is considered quite rare from the standpoint that probably only 100 copies of that basic Journal were printed. Each volume is plastic spiral bound. Volume 3 has an end spiral plastic part [that helps to keep the binding and pages together] that is partially broken; that volume currently has tape around the spiral edges to help keep the pages together, another plastic spiral could probably rather easily be inserted to keep those pages together. If you are interested in purchasing that Journal please call 801-344-3413 [a voice mail phone number] and please leave me a voice message with a phone number that I could perhaps call to talk with you about that Journal. more

Thomas Bullock Nauvoo Journal Hardcover 1994

$100.00

Kaysville, UT | 1 Day
New - Limited Edition of 500 CopiesFrom the introduction - The Bullock Journal was obtained by BYU in December 1987 from a branch of the Bullock family in Colorado. The original is actually in book form, but rather eleven long sheets of white paper stitched together across the middle and folded in half. As many of the entries appear to be lists of things done with specific times assigned to each task performed, it would seem reasonable to suggest that Bullock carried the journal with him. more

William Law Hardcover –June, 1994, Lyndon W. Cook

$100.00

Kaysville, UT | 1 Day
New Condition - unopened, still wrapped in original cellophaneLaw, William, second counselor to president Joseph Smith, from 1841-44 was born Sept. 8, 1809. In the early days of the Church, when Elders John Taylor and Almon W. Babbitt labored in Canada as missionaries, William Law, who lived twenty-five miles from Toronto, became a convert to "Mormonism," and it is stated in the history of Joseph Smith that he arrived at Nauvoo, Ill., in the latter part of 1839, "with a company of Saints, traveling in seven wagons from Canada." He soon became a prominent man in Nauvoo, where he served as a member of the municipal council, a captain in the Nauvoo Legion, etc. He also kept a store, owned several mills and was considered wealthy. In the revelation given through Joseph the Prophet, at Nauvoo, Jan. 19, 1841, he was called to the office of second counselor to President Joseph Smith, succeeding Hyrum Smith, who was called to the position of presiding Patriarch. Soon afterwards he filled a short mission to the East, and was for a season considered a good and faithful man. He was among the chosen few who on May 26, 1843, received their endowments under the administration of Joseph the Prophet, and who were instructed in the Priesthood and on the new and everlasting covenant. Towards the close of 1843 he began to show symptoms of apostasy and associated himself with the enemies of Joseph and the Saints generally. This led to his excommunication from the Church April 18. 1844, in a council meeting held at Nauvoo and attended by the leading authorities of the Church. After this occurrence Wm. Law came out openly as an enemy and was one of the promoters and owners of the libel sheet called the "Nauvoo Expositor," published at Nauvoo. His name is classed in history with those of his brother Wilson Law, Robert D. Foster, Charles Foster, Francis M. Higbee, Chauncey L. Higbee, Joseph H. Jackson, Sylvester Emmons and others, who were the instigators and abettors of the murder of Joseph and Hyrum Smith. In 1887 he was interviewed by a newspaper reporter at Shullsburg, Lafayette county, Wisconsin, where he then resided with his son, Judge Thomas Law. On that occasion he still exhibited great animosity towards Joseph the Prophet and the "Mormon" people, and related some extraordinary stories concerning his experience with the Saints at Nauvoo. The interview is published in full as a part of an appendix to an anti-Mormon work, entitled "The Prophet of Palmyra," written by Thomas Griggs of Hamilton. Ill. Wm. Law died at Shullsburg, Wis., Jan. 19, 1892, in the 83rd year of his age. more
