SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show Utah's unemployment rate remained steady at 7.3 percent from April to May.

The Utah Department of Workforce Services also says the state has gained about 900 jobs over the past year, leaving total employment at about 1.19 million. The department issued the May figures on Thursday.

The Department of Workforce Services says it appears the U.S. economy has turned an economic corner and that the economic rebound also is taking root in Utah, where a modest recovery looks to have started.

The department says nearly 99,000 Utahns were considered unemployed in May. Last May the unemployment rate was 6.8 percent.

Utah's unemployment rate for May remained well below the national figure of 9.7 percent.
