MILLCREEK -- Two people are dead after a TRAX train collided with their car Thursday night.

Investigators in Salt Lake County say a car was waiting at the gate near 200 West and 4100 South for a TRAX train to pass. But then the driver pulled around the gate and into the path of a train, which was traveling at full speed.

"It was definitely a direct hit, and it literally encompasses the entire front of train," said Unified police Lt. Don Hutson. "It took the car, along with the passengers, 300 feet down the tracks."

The driver of the car and a man sitting behind her died. Two other passengers went to the hospital in critical condition.

At least 60 people were on the train, but none of them was hurt.

TRAX service continued in the area.
