(KSL News) Amid the summer drought of political news Utah Republicans held their organizing convention today. On the agenda -- the election of party leaders and discussion of the party's future.

This organizing convention is always a chance for Utah Republicans to renew their goals for the party and its candidates. They wrapped it all up quickly, with very few changes.

The Utah GOP faithful packed the house at the Salt Lake Community College. And in the end, they voted to keep the leadership that's guided the party for the last few years.

There were a lot of speeches, a lot of handshaking, and a lot of campaigning.

Former Chair of the Republican Party and now Utah Congressman Rob Bishop says the convention was succesful, especially because it showed the party's goals are on track.

Rob Bishop/(R) Utah, District 1: "It's going to be very conservative, fiscally responsible and socially conservative. It fits the mainstream of Utah, which is why Republicans have been so successful here in Utah."

Todd Weiler/ Ran for Vice-Chair: "I was cautiously optimistic, but I knew the reality of running against an opponent with 100 percent name ID. Part of politics is that you've got to get our name out there."

Todd Weiler ran against again incumbent Enid Greene for the vice chair position. It was the closest race today. Greene won with just over 50 percent of the votes.

The other winners were incumbents as well. Joe Cannon remains chair of the party, Candace Daly remains secretary and Michael McCauley is still treasurer.

There were several booths out today, too. Senator Orrin Hatch had a presence. He is up for re-election in 2006.
