KSL congratulates Bishop John Charles Wester on his formal installation as Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake.

With Wednesday's impressive installation mass at the Cathedral of the Madeleine, Bishop Wester became the 9th man to serve as spiritual leader of Utah's growing and diverse catholic population.

It was good to see so many local civic and religious leaders join dozens of Catholic bishops and cardinals from around the country, as well as the Pope's special representative for the installation celebration. Bridges are built when people with diverse backgrounds, beliefs and ideas set aside differences for such special occasions.

By all accounts, the expanding Catholic Church in Utah will be well-served by Bishop Wester. Through the many years he has been involved in the leadership of his church in San Francisco, where he has lived his entire life, he has demonstrated keen administrative skills. But he is also known for his pastoral sensitivities and his innate ability to reach out to all, regardless of social, political or economic status.

While much of his heart will undoubtedly remain in his native San Francisco, KSL is certain Bishop Wester will find a welcoming spirit and wonderful home here in Utah. We join the broader community in saying congratulations.
