PROVO, Utah (Aug. 9, 2002) -- Freshman defensive end C.J. Ah You is expected to miss the 2002 season after suffering a knee injury during the Cougars' first practice on Thursday. Ah You, who redshirted the 2001 season after being granted a medical hardship, will undergo surgery on Aug. 15. Preliminary tests indicated that Ah You suffered both ACL and MCL damage in his left knee during a non-contact scrimmage. The extent of the injury will not be known until surgery is performed later this month. Ah You missed the 2001 season after a similar injury in his right knee.

"We feel badly for C.J.," head coach Gary Crowton said. "After getting hurt last year, he worked very hard to get ready for this season. He is a tough kid and will work just as hard to overcome this injury as well. This will obviously set him back a little, but we are confident he will be able to get back and will have some great years of football ahead of him."

Ah You, who is listed at 6-foot-4, 265-pounds, was listed as the preseason starter at right defensive end. His backup has not yet been determined, however Brady Poppinga, Moa Peaua, Brandon Stephens, John Denney, Jeff Cowart and Shan Nua are all competing for playing time at defensive end.

Offensive lineman Ryan Keele suffered a compression injury in his left knee. According to head trainer Geroge Curtis, Keele will undergo treatment on the injury and is listed as day-to-day.
