(KSL News) -- A man once at the center of a massive search in southern Utah is now facing charges.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office filed second degree felony charges today against Bryan Butas. Charging documents say Butas abandoned his car in a southern Utah campground, hid in his home, and then headed out to Australia.
Butas reportedly told investigators he tried to fake his own disappearance so his children could have 250-thousand dollars from a life insurance policy. He said he wanted to help his children because he'd been unable to financially provide for his family in recent months.
