WEST VALLEY CITY -- A West Valley City teen accused of sexually abusing a 6-year-old neighbor girl will be evaluated for mental competency.

The Deseret News reports the teen, who was 17 years old at the time of the attack, appeared before 3rd District Juvenile Judge Dane Nolan Monday.

Police say the teen lured the girl into his yard Sept. 11, 2009, then choked and sexually assaulted her. Investigators say he then threw her over the backyard fence.

The teen then got help from his sister and a neighbor, telling them he had just discovered the child.

He now faces kidnapping, sexual abuse and assault charges.

The girl's parents told the Deseret News that she is getting psychological therapy and is doing well.
