Let’s talk a little football – Utah Utes football.
On Urban Meyer! We’re not about to congratulate him on his new job in Florida, but we surely want to thank him for what he accomplished at Utah. Undefeated! BCS bowl! What a dream season!
On Kyle Whittingham! Him we’ll congratulate. For his sake, though, we hope rabid fans of the football program he’ll now lead will have realistic expectations for the future.
On Alex Smith! Post-season honors keep piling up for the U quarterback. And while the NFL may beckon, we hope he’ll stick around for his senior year. The new coach will need him.
Parenthetically, on Ron McBride! Welcome back, although you’ll be in Ogden, not Salt Lake.
Finally, on the Fiesta Bowl and the BCS! It’s terrific the Utes made history as the first team from a so-called “mid-major conference” to crack the elite system.
Regardless, KSL believes the BCS ought to be scrapped. It’s blatantly unfair and contradicts much of what is traditionally good about collegiate athletics. As one example, look no further than this year’s pairings - including Utah’s – and which talented teams were excluded from competing for a national championship.
Foremost, we wish the Utes well in their remaining quest to come out victorious on January 1 and complete an undefeated season.
