Forget all that election talk about red states and blue states. Utahns know the real battle between the Red and the Blue takes place tomorrow at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Never mind the Bushies and the Kerryites. Make room for the Utes and the Cougars and the only poll that truly counts, the one settled on the playing field during the annual football showdown between two combative collegiate siblings.

What a treat for Beehive State football fans. There’s undefeated Utah, enjoying a season for the ages, ranked among the nation’s elite, on the verge of making history by earning a spot and a huge payday in a coveted BCS bowl. And there’s BYU hoping to end the year on a positive note, become bowl eligible with a six win season, preserve some pride, and perhaps even play another day.

The Utes appear to have the advantage. As always, though, when these siblings get together you can throw out the season standings. As it has been since 1896, when it’s Red versus Blue, it’s all about a rivalry unlike any other in the country. Feuding families! Divided loyalties! Split neighborhoods and communities! When the Red and the Blue mix it up, you can bet there’ll be a lot of purple bruises. Can’t wait! Let the fun begin.
