The United Way of Salt Lake is in the midst of another annual fund raising campaign. Money collected will help sustain dozens of agencies that serve the needy along the Wasatch Front. The enduring charitable organization deserves widespread support.
This year’s campaign is especially significant since it marks the organization’s centennial.
It was 1904 when a group of visionary Utah citizens led by Reverend Elmer Goshen of the First Congregational Church formed a clearinghouse for the various charitable causes in the area. They called their organization The Salt Lake Charity Association. Their goal: “to help the poor, to discourage panhandlers, and to coordinate the multiple programs serving the needy.”
Now, of course, it is called United Way. And though much has changed since 1904, it remains one of the area’s most viable vehicles for receiving and distributing charitable contributions throughout Salt Lake, Summit, and Tooele counties. The organization’s track record is superb. Because of the support of local foundations and corporations, a hundred percent of each contribution received goes toward helping the needy.
KSL heartily endorses the United Way. We join the broader community in thanking the organization for a century of remarkable service. And we encourage all to support the ongoing fund raising effort.
