Is election year politics at the root of Salt Lake County Mayor Nancy Workman’s legal problems, as she is claiming, or did she actually break the law, lie and misuse public money?

For the sake of the mayor’s constituents, the question needs to be answered as quickly as possible. Therefore, KSL urges District Attorney David Yocum, a democrat, to expedite the legal case against the republican mayor. If he’s going to file charges, he should do it soon. To delay or draw out the process, in our view, would tend to validate the mayor’s allegations that Mr. Yocum’s motives are political in nature.

The election is just two months away, and any unnecessary delay would only strengthen the position of those candidates who are running against the mayor.

That there is little love lost between the mayor and the D.A. is no secret in county circles, so Mr. Yocum was wise to assemble a panel of independent attorneys from neighboring counties to review the allegations. Their background and bipartisan makeup lend credence to their conclusion: there is sufficient evidence to charge the mayor with felony misuse of public monies.

In KSL’s view, this is an extremely serious matter that demands expeditious handling and resolution. So, get on with it as soon as possible. Don’t let politics trump justice.
