As the political convention dust settles and her would-be successors rev up their campaigns, Olene Walker continues her service as Governor of Utah. To her credit, she isn’t viewing her lame duck status as a hindrance, and promises to forge forward.

In KSL’s view, she should! She has, after all, set an agenda worthy of action since becoming governor in November.

Early on, for example, she introduced a team of tax policy advisors and charged them with formulating a realistic plan for overhauling Utah’s tax system. We encourage her to follow through with the goal of unveiling her proposals by August 1 and then force the issue during the fall election, as planned.

More recently, Walker unveiled a blueprint for resolving wilderness and public lands disputes in Utah. Achieving that goal by year’s end may be unrealistic, but at least she has opposing sides willing to try. Who knows what a retiring governor, without the burden of having to play partisan political games, might actually accomplish!

And now that she’s no longer a candidate, she can renew her visible, on-air support of her vital reading initiative. It would be a monumental legacy to actually get adults in Utah to spend 20 minutes each day reading to a child.

Governor Walker may be a lame duck, but in KSL’s view, she still has powerful wings.
