BOULDER, Colo. (AP) -- Brigham Young offensive line coach Jeff Grimes has been hired for the same position at Colorado, reuniting him with CU coach Dan Hawkins.

Grimes, 38, replaces Chris Strausser, who resigned Feb. 8 to return to Boise State.

Grimes was an offensive line coach at Boise State in 2000, when Hawkins was an assistant.

The next three years, Grimes held the same position at Arizona State while also serving as the running game coordinator. There, he worked closely with current CU offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich, who joined Hawkins' staff in Boulder last season.

Grimes said it was hard to leave BYU and coach Bronco Mendenhall.

"He's a great head coach and a great friend. It was difficult to tell him I was leaving to take another job," Grimes said. "I really enjoyed being a part of what we did there and turning that program back around and I can't say enough good things about him as a person.

"But Hawk is as good a head coach as there is anywhere in the country, and the opportunity to work with him again is something that I've wanted to do for awhile," Grimes said.

Hawkins said Colorado was fortunate to get someone of Grimes' experience, knowledge and character. He said Grimes' connections to Texas would help with recruiting. Grimes, a Texas native, started his coaching career at a high school in El Paso before working as a graduate assistant at Rice and then Texas A&M.

"He's a great teacher and I think he has a great way of developing guys, not only technically but with a mentality you need in the offensive line," Hawkins said.
