News Specialist Debbie Dujanovic reporting
(Salt Lake City, KSL News) -- A growing number of women are getting tired of putting on makeup every day.
Some of them are turning to a more "permanent" solution -- TATOOED eyebrows and the like that don't wash off!
Christy Richards is preparing to throw out her washable eyeliner and go for a permanent look.
"I can feel my top lids are numb," she says.
After numbing the skin, makeup artist Kelly Deweeret will spend the next two hours carefully applying permanent eyeliner to Richards' eyelids.
"It lifts her skin and implants the pigment," Deweeret says.
This is a form of tatooing for the face -- makeup that stays put for up to a decade.
Deweeret does lids and eyebrows at a cost of about $275 a piece.
"This is called secret passion," she says.
Lined lips cost more -- about $400.
"It's becoming more popular. Three years ago when I started doing it, it was just few and far between, more hush-hush type of thing. Now it's getting pretty popular," Deweeret says.
She works out of a beauty salon in West Valley City. The reason for the increase, she says, is women are out to save time.
And Deweeret suggests -- although it's rare -- she watch her eyes in case of infection.
If you're considering giving up your washable makeup for a more permanent look, consider this -- there's no real regulation over the industry, and no government agency that oversees it either.
Since Deweeret works out of a salon, the health department pays her a visit, just once a year, to check for cleanliness.
She's also certified through a beauty college, but says because of the lack of industry regulation, the best way to find a permanent makeup artist is word of mouth from women who've had it done.
That's how Richards found Deweeret, and when it's over, her eyes still a little numb, she looks forward to the permanent change. The best part, she says: "Probably the lack of time I'll have to spend putting makeup on -- laziness I guess."
