(Salt Lake City-AP) -- A state education committee has recommended increased graduation requirements but also suggests they could be fulfilled by demonstrating competency as an alternative to taking classes.

The committee on graduation requirements presented its recommendations to the state Board of Education yesterday.

The list of potential requirements included one-half credit of personal finance and three credits in a specific area of focus chosen by the student.

Students could get the graduation credits by taking the class or demonstrating competency.
