(Salt Lake City, KSL News) -- The Utah Republican Party has announced the organization of the Utah Republican Black Assembly.
Members of the assembly say they hope to recruit blacks into the Republican Party and to enroll volunteers to work on behalf of the party in their communities.
"The second thing is that we want to be a voice for the people and that means we have to listen, so that's a big part of the reason for the press conference. So that people know we are available and we are already seeing some of the impact of that," says Henry Autry with the assembly.
"The third part of that is to share some of the concerns of the black community with the Republican Party," he says.
Assembly members say it's time the black community exercises its economic and political presence by working inside the Republican Party.
