(Provo-AP) -- While Ralph Joe Jiron Sr. was in jail awaiting seven rape charges, prosecutors say he tried to hire a hit man to kill three potential witnesses.

During the past two months, the 54-year-old Springville man allegedly paid thousands of dollars to an undercover police officer posing as a hit man.

Jiron is scheduled to be arraigned today on charges of solicitation to commit aggravated murder, solicitation to commit aggravated kidnapping and solicitation to commit witness tampering.

A preliminary hearing in the rape case is set for March 12th.
