LAYTON, Utah (AP) -- The Layton Police Department has received a federal grant for two investigators to fight prescription drug abuse and gang activity.
The $238,789 in stimulus funds is administered by the state Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice.
Layton Police Lt. Quinn Moyes says the money will cover training and two years' salary and benefits for two full-time investigators, who will be hired from within the department.
Moyes says Layton officers investigated 22 deaths from prescription drug overdoses in 2008.
Moyes says the second investigator will focus on the increasing number of gang members who have moved to Layton from the Ogden and Salt Lake City areas.
