(Salt Lake City-AP) -- Boeing Company announced that it will lay off 80 of its 395 workers at its Salt Lake City plant within the next two months.

Citing the weak economy and the downturn in commercial air travel as reasons for the layoffs, Chicago-based Boeing said the cutbacks will affect both management and workers. Employees were expected to get official notice next week.

The layoffs, which will take effect May 23rd, are part of the five thousand-employee reduction in force that Boeing announced for its commercial airplane division in November.

Boeing's Utah plant, located just east of Salt Lake City International Airport, produces spare parts for aircraft that are no longer in production.

The company is still working on the details of the severance packages it will offer its soon-to-be laid off employees.
