(Salt Lake City-AP) -- The cost for a vehicle emissions test could go up in Salt Lake County by as much as seven dollars and 50 cents.

The County Council expects to discuss the proposed increase today.

Right now, businesses that offer the emissions test are allowed to charge up to 25 dollars.

But owners of those businesses say new rules will hurt their profits. The Legislature has decided that newer vehicles only need to be inspected every other year -- which is estimated to cost the test stations a 23-percent drop in business.

But some who oppose the increase say the new vehicles take less time to inspect -- which saves labor for the businesses.
