Stacey Butler reportingJoseph Freed Seth's Best Friend: "YOU CAN'T BLAME YOURSELF BUT IN A WAY YOU'RE JUST LIKE I COULDN'T DO ANYTHING YOU JUST HAVE TO WATCH AS YOUR FRIEND DIES."
Friends of a young man crushed by a boulder at Donut Falls yesterday mourn their loss, and remember him as a hero.
Seth Buhr, died in a bizarre accident in the popular hiking area, in Big Cottonwood Canyon. And today, the friends who were with him, wanted to let everyone know how much they thought of him.
Guileless, humorous, selfless, always thinking of others even unto his death. That is how the returned LDS missionary, 22 year old Seth Buhr is remembered tonight. As his friends who were hiking with him recount the terrible accident that ended his life.
Jeannette Smith Seth's friend :"HE WAS SO GUILELESS, HE NEVER THOUGHT BAD OF ANYONE. IT KIND OF MAKES SENSE, THAT'S HOW HE DIED, SAVING ANOTHER PERSON'S LIFE."
Dara Jacobberger Seth's friend :"IT'S STILL PLAYING OVER AND OVER IN MY HEAD BECAUSE I SAW THE WHOLE THING HAPPEN."
It's not something these three will soon forget. Their friend 22 year old Seth Buhr, shoving Jeannette Smith out of the way seconds before a five ton boulder crushed him to death.
Jeannette Smith Seth's friend :"SETH IS UNDER THERE HE CAN'T MOVE AND HIS LIFE'S JUST SLIPPING AWAY AND THERE'S NOTHING WE CAN DO ABOUT IT."
Dara Jacobberger Seth's friend :"I SAW HIM LIKE SLIDING ON THE ROCKS AND THE BOULDER LIKE FELL ON TOP OF HIM. JOE LIKE SCREAMS AND RUNS OVER THERE."
Joseph Freed Seth's Best Friend :"IF ANYTHING EVER HAPPENED TO SETH I WAS GOING TO BE THERE, BUT LIKE THIS ONE TIME--I COULDN'T DO ANYTHING, AND HE DIED BECAUSE OF IT. I HATE THAT YOU CAN'T BLAME YOURSELF BUT IN A WAY YOU SAY I CAN'T DO ANYTHING. YOU JUST HAVE TO WATCH AS YOUR FRIEND DIES."
As his friends waited for help to arrive, they prayed for Seth's life. Today they pray to come to terms with his death.
Jeannette Smith Seth's friend :"I THINK THAT BY GETTING CLOSER TO THE LORD HE WILL PUT SOME COMFORT IN OUR HEARTS, AND WE'LL BE ABLE TO ACCEPT IT. "
Buhr was a student at LDS Business School in Salt Lake . Last summer he returned from a 2-year mission in Chile for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
