(Salt Lake City-AP) -- Plans for a nuclear storage site in Utah's west desert got a boost, but the bid remains shelved by other problems.

A federal board ruled Thursday that a the planned storage site for spent nuclear fuel rods on the reservation of the Skull Valley Band of Goshutes meets the standards to withstand earthquakes.

However, on March 10th, the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board turned down Private Fuel Storage by ruling the site, located under a flyway to an Air Force training and bombing range, could be compromised if a fighter-plane were to crash.

Private Fuel Storage has filed an appeal to that ruling which is scheduled to be reviewed on May 29th.

In addition to the rulings on plane crash and earthquake risks, other issues from earlier hearings need to be resolved before the site can be licensed.
