Jill Atwood Reporting...A robber behind the wheel of his own getaway car didn't get away from a posse of police early this morning.
Javier Garcia was arrested after officers threw metal spikes on the road to slow down his speeding car.
The police spikes caused Garcia to lose control and ram into a fence. Later officers found a gun in the car. The scene just before sun up along the 2100 hundred south freeway showed the suspect's truck hung up on the fence as officers handcuffed the alleged robber Javier Garcia.
Garcia may be behind as many as four robberies across the county that all went down yesterday.
It all started with this Sinclair station in Murray Holladay around 4 o’clock yesterday.
Later, a Cornermart in Salt Lake City was also hit. During this robbery the suspect fired a shot, but it didn't hit anyone.
Finally, just before midnight last night a Maverik was also robbed in Salt Lake City.
Witnesses there managed to jot down the description of a truck leaving the scene.
Lt. Jim Coleman/Salt Lake City Police: "WEST JORDAN POLICE SPOTTED THAT VEHICLE ABOUT A QUARTER TO FIVE THIS MORNING."
At this point cops can't say how many robberies Garcia is behind, but considering the gun found in his truck, the matching descriptions, and the fact that Garcia obviously didn't want to be caught leads them to believe they were chasing the right man.
Lt. Jim Coleman/Salt Lake City Police: "I’M SURE THE OFFICERS WERE VERY CONCERNED THE ENTIRE TIME OF WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN -- WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN WHEN THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP. THEREFORE IT WAS A LOT OF STRESS."
Salt Lake City Police say they will file charges of armed robbery. And they say again that aware witnesses really helped them get this guy.
