Karen Scullin Reporting...Most of us try to avoid the construction here on South Temple, but police believe it may have actually attracted a pair of bank robbers to the Health Care Credit Union.

The bad guys had it all planned out but police had to maneuver through broken roads and one way streets.

For nearby construction workers, building a road and trying to stop a pair of bank robbers was all in a days work.

Christian Pocock/Witness: “ABOUT 45 SECONDS LATER THESE GUYS COME BOLTING OUT THE BANK SURE ENOUGH, MONEY FLYING"

The quick chain of events started to unravel about 9:30 this morning when construction crews spotted the bad guys dressed in black head to toe. It was clear what was about to happen.

Christian Pocock: “THEY'RE NOT GOING IN TO MAKE A DEPOSIT. THEY'RE GOING IN TO MAKE A QUICK WITHDRAWAL. … THEY WERE ADJUSTING THEIR GARB, YA KNOW, GETTING THEIR HOODS PULLED DOWN AS THEY WERE WALKING."

While screaming to his buddies to call police, Pocock watched as the bandits came face to face with a customer.

Christian Pocock: “THE GUY AT THE DOOR -- I MEAN HIS EYES JUST GOT AS BIG AS SAUCERS YA KNOW -- LIKE THAT"

Robert/Witness: “THEY JUST GOT ON THE RADIO...CALL 9-1-1. AND THEY STARTED TELLING ME WHAT WAS GOING ON AND I WAS RELAYING IT ALL TO 9-1-1."

After passing a note to a teller, the robbers came out with the cash, and construction workers were in hot pursuit.

But with a getaway car waiting in the avenues the two men escaped. Pocock says he's glad he at least gave it a shot.

Christian Pocock: “WE'RE HARD WORKING GUYS, YA KNOW, WE BUST OUR HUMPS EVERY DAY TO GET THIS SOUTH TEMPLE PROJECT DONE, AND TO SEE GUYS LIKE THAT TAKING SHORT CUTS, YA KNOW, IT REFLECTS BAD ON OUR COMMUNITY"

The two men took off in a white small car with two other men inside. Police are still looking for the foursome. If you have any information call the Salt Lake City Police Department.
